Hooray for WTIU

I am not usually fond of those fund drives that public TV and public radio put on. Although I did once years ago appear on our local PBS station's drive, I more often avoid listening or watching during the drives.
Fortunately the Amazingly Accomodating Man alerted me to a special on this year's WTIU drive:  a documentary on Blenko glass.

Now, what you should know is that I grew up in West Virginia among this glass blowing tradition, with Blenko and Pilgrim and Rainbow and Kanawa and more all close to home -- so I have memories of stopping in Milton to visit the Blenko glassworks that go back more than half a century.  I remember when guests could just walk out on the floor and stand around the glass blowers and crunch on the shards of broken glass on the floor, when we could pick out sharp bits of color from the slag pile to carry home.  I remember when the new visitor center opened in the 60's and we walked through the glass garden where the walls were inset with glass and the "flowers" were created by sunlight streaming through the colored panels, or stood in the glass kalidescope that was about the size of an elevator and watched glass patterns shift around us.  We would stop on our way to Charleston to visit Grandmother or we'd take company up to see the glass works, or we'd go to buy presents in the gift shop.  Some of the Blenko pieces I have were my mother's, some were my aunt's, and some I've been gifted over the years.  And now I have one that was a PBS premium!
Yes, WFIU offered Benko glass as a donation premium - hey, it worked with me.  After all I didn't need another tote bag or umbrella...
So this past week a box arrived marked:

and cradled inside was this:
a brilliant blue Blenko pitcher.

After pizza we discuss facial hair

It is challenging to grow a proper handlebar.
It takes a lot of tweaking.
What you need is a capable mustache tweaker.
Thank goodness he's found one!

In the check-out line

The 5th graders are lined up for check-out with the usual buzz of conversation in several different languages.  Down the line two voices stand out: "deedle deele dee", "dee dee idle dee".  I wonder if they are trying to remember words to a nonsense song.  The taller one reaches me first, the beads in her braids clacking together as she pushes her books towards me.  "De dee iddee ib id eee",  she says.  Her little blonde friend agrees "Deoodle diddle dee." I finish checking out their books.  "Dibi dee de?" she asks. I look at her.  "No body understands us" they say together, and dissolve into giggles as they walk away.

How you know what's popular in the school library

You walk by the 031 and 032 section and the books are all over the floor, pushed in the shelves higgedy-piggedy and upside down, and at least one stray title is all the way down by the 300's.

The ice snake

Help! The house is being swallowed by an ice snake!
See those sharp fangs?
They are getting longer, sparkling, drops of ...venom?... dripping - wait! There goes one!
Yay, sunshine!  Melt that ice snake away!

Now really, isn't that more fun than worrying about ice dams and leaky gutters?

Wish I had them everyday

If you go out after a blizzard to feed the birds..
it is good to have useful companions to help you.
Especially if they are willing to shake snow off the trees so the limbs won't break
and if they don't mind getting a little snow in their socks.

The After Christmas Bookstore Trip

What could be better after Christmas than a trip to a book store?
Especially when you find just the right books...
and just the right game.
Can't wait to start reading.
Oh - has everyone else finished eating and left?
This is a really engaging story!
A cold snowy afternoon with a new book -
the perfect after-Christmas activity!

In which I get what I wanted for Christmas:

Which was the house full of family and dogs...
and everyone posing for the traditional picture around the box lid with the date on it.
(including the Boston Gentleman's impersonation of the Hound of the Baskervilles)

Hastening along: 2001! 2002!

Oh, I can't keep up with this!

2001 hurries by...

I've now scanned hundreds of pictures.
Lots of great faces, sweet smiles, goofy looks.
 There's a dinner at Mimi's
 and another Christmas Eve party

and some more wonderful snow.

2002 shows the kids getting bigger (as expected)
 people are still putting

things on their heads  (also as expected)
and these two guys are bemused at the family they find themselves in.

Up counting: 1999

When we use the phrase "big Christmas"..

you know we measured it and it would barely fit through the door.
The tree took two tall men to put on the lights.
There were new ornaments...
and a new stocking.

Those who dressed up for Christmas Eve...

and those who dressed up for New Year's Eve.

Smiles,
and more smiles...
and a few field trips to introduce the littlest one to our hairy, furry friends.

Up counting: 1998

1998 was another year with two Christmases.
We had an early celebration with the Adventurous Bloomingtonaut,
who then took off to paddle around Baja and have Christmas on a sandy island.
We, however, went on to have all the traditional parts of Christmas--the tree, the friends on Christmas Eve, the weird presents, the various and sundry usual photos- including of course the guy with something on his head...
and this year, with something new in his arms!

Counting Up: 96 -97

A new Home Place in 1996 ...
Lovely empty space, right?
Watch it fill up in the coming years.
It wasn't just the house - the family was changing.
Check out the Christmas Card - yes, the kids moved out.
Which is not to say they didn't come home again for Christmas:
Here's 1997.
I guess the living room hadn't filled up too much yet.
Still, the family was changing.  We met our wonderful SIL-to-be for the first time.
Mimi had a new haircut.
What didn't change? A wonderful gathering of friends on Christmas Eve.

Wish we could have all of you and your families here again!!
