A Hot Day in Louisville

We went on a road trip to Louisville to revisit some of cousin Edie's favorite places.
It was a hot day.
We were cleverly dressed in black.
We looked for shade--a picnic shelter in Cherokee Park where the family often picnicked.
And water - the lake at Cave Hill Cemetery - which we visited with the traditional loaf of stale bread.
Shade AND water - just what you need on a hot day.
The really aggressive ducks and geese agreed.

Hot Water

Now a feature of our facilities:
fresh hot water from a brand new tank.

The Bloomingtonauts arrive!

We are delighted to welcome the Bloomingtonauts!

Now we have to get busy --a mere week in which to do everything on the list...

Where green still grows

We're in a drought.
Things are turning brown, growing stunted.
 Everywhere leaves are withering.
The lawn?
What lawn?  Crisp, fried grass punctuated by an occasional deep rooted weed.
But somewhere things are growing just fine.
One of the few places I've actually worked on this year.
I even know exactly the date: May 19th.
On May 19th I pulled out the Autumn Clematis and cut back the Pokeweed and trimmed the hedge.
The sidewalk was clear, the air conditioning units free of climbing or clinging vines.
It was, in fact, quite a neat looking entryway.
And today?
The only place where things are burgeoning out of control.
Poor meter reader fighting through this jungle.
Figures, eh?

Happy 4th!

Daisy liked the big pieces of paper we found in the basement.
She liked all the markers, crayons, pencils and stickers too.
We drew things together.
She drew me.  I drew her.  Socks wandered into the parade.
She added stickers.
It turned out to be a very big picture and had to be held together with clips. Here's the message:
complete with fireworks!

Water, water -somewhere else

You may have serious rain and flooding.  We are in the midst of a drought, following the driest June on record.  Water conservation is urged, fireworks are cancelled. The yard is brown and crisp, the trees curling up their dying leaves and dropping their unripe apples.  And to add insult to injury this morning a water main broke and we have NO water for all those useful activities we need to do like washing and flushing. The water company hopes to have it fixed in (are you ready for this?) 8 hours.  Granddad does a LOT of flushing in 8 hours.  I do a lot of washing.  Then there is the small matter of cooking three meals, which always involves more water than you'd expect.
We are, however, resourceful.  Out come all the old camping containers and off I go to find a likely spot to fill them.  There IS water at the office.  So ha!  We'll just pretend we're camping!
And as for flushing -- well, there is all that handy water in the pool...
