Red, White and Blue Cookies

Every holiday deserves its own cookies, so the Vacationeers decided to make patriotic cookies for the Picnic with the Pops.
Many hands soon turned out stacks of warm, sweet-smelling shapes.
And then it was time to add the decoration
in red, white and blue icing.

Soon the table was full of stars and liberty bells.

Really, such hard work should be rewarded--with a cookie!

A Blogging Theme

As we all follow the adventures of the "Dangerous Turtles", team number 73 in "the longest annual canoe and kayak race in the world", we may wonder how a gal from our land-locked state became a world class kayaker. The answer may lie here: Far across the Griffy Reservoir we spy tiny dots of orange.
They paddle closer and voices shriek across the quiet water.

It's the Junior Rangers coming back from a two hour paddle - for many of them, a first time experience in a canoe.
It wasn't a race, of course.

But our Junior Vacationeers did come in first!

Mysterious events again

June 24th is Mimi's birthday. "I'm not going to be home," she said. "No party!" she said. "I don't want anyone to do anything!"
Does she really think we'd ignore the date?
Just to be sure that no one celebrates, she's left town. Off to gamble with Charles. This means that we don't have to sneak this year when we decorate her yard. Oh, I didn't mean to say that. I mean when someone snuck in to decorate her yard.
Whoever it might have been could just pull right into the driveway and flip-flop right up to the door. You can see our theme...besides PINK of course.A summery table set on the back porch with a drink for her

and a drink for him
(That flip-flop's really a plate)
The tiny coca-cola glasses and the citrus plates decorate another picnic-y setting.

We wouldn't forget to make an addition to the frog collection. Hope all this doesn't blow around too much before she comes home tomorrow night.

Ahh, Summer

The Junior Vacationeers are busily compiling traditional summer experiences. We had to set up the hammock under the apple tree since the big maple is gone from the back yard. Two people in the hammock made for some serious balancing problems.
It's not only fun to eat watermelon - it's a vacation photo-op.

Today they started Junior Ranger Summer Camp at the lake. A week of hiking, boating, and games in the woods.
Another page for the memory book.

Not even swimming

Water is an important part of the summer experience, even when you are not swimming. We like to be wet whether reading or hunting for frogs.
Amazingly, this Junior Vacationeer has caught five little frogs.
One escaped, but the other four are enjoying an aquarium habitat under the pergola.
We tried to catch bugs for them, but this was a less successful activity.
Enough of the bugs caught us that we came stomping and scratching home. Let those froglets catch their own bugs.

Off to the markets

The Junior Vacationeers ventured out to the Farmer's Market this morning with money burning holes in their pockets. We discovered that two dollars doesn't go very far unless you are buying cucumbers (only 50 cents each!). Who wants to buy cucumbers when there are such things as lovely bouquets and little bears made of wax?
Still, we enjoyed the free sights and scents and sensations and the adults got fresh tomatoes for tonight's salsa.
Sarah took this picture - a clever way to bring eggs to market.
We went from the Farmer's Market to the Art Fair on the Square, where the brass band was playing in front of the Courthouse and booth after booth was filled with fantastic items.
We especially liked the way this artist recycled odds and ends into sculptures. Think we could find some old brushes and strainers and sunglasses and make some too?
And we loved the delicate work of the artist who made items covered with a special coiled clay. Everything was SO lovely and SO tempting and SO much more than $2.00.

Getting Wet!

Yes, Summer is officially HERE! The Vacationeers could hardly wait to get wet! This is 9:15 A.M.
Did I mention that they stayed awake until 11:00 last night?

Let the good times roll

The Vacationeers have arrived! By train and plane and more plane and car, they arrived early this evening (at what would be 2:30 a.m. their time.) They've been going for, oh, 20 hours or so.

Are they tired? Ready to fall into bed? Only one...that would be the Mama Vacationeer.
Brother Vacationeer and Sister Vacationeer are wired. They check out their bedrooms, and the book supply, and Sister Vacationeer begins to read aloud "1,000 Knock -knock Jokes";
"knock -knock"
Who's there?
"Sarah"
Sarah who?
"Sarah reason you're not laughing?"
We all discover that one thousand is a LOT of knock-knocks.
Mama Vacationeer unpacks. She has brought her bathroom clock with her - and appallingly, finds that by now it is 4:30 in the morning.
The kids have moved on to the Legos and doll house. They're not tired. Not at all. They have been just waiting to get here. They want to do everything right now!

Late Spring Cleaning

I am in the midst of the mess one makes when one is cleaning...deep cleaning...earning the extra bumps below my knees that are called "housemaid's knees".And with this cleaning comes the exited expectation that the European Vacationeers will soon be here.
But the fancy rug shampoo-er has let me down.
Sure it takes up dirt, lots of dirt, and that's a good thing. But I expected more. I wanted the stains to disappear. I wanted the carpets to LOOK clean, not just BE clean.
Phooey.
Just promise you won't look too closely.

Dr. Hausfrau hat einen Geburtstag

Now, Dr. HF, you've been having birthdays for a while now and I hope you've gotten the hang of it. In case you're not certain about the protocol, here's some reminders.
Don't be shy about the cake - follow the Bloomingtonaut's example here and just dive right in fist first.
Be prepared to open wonderful presents
and you don't have to share them with your friends
This is a time for indulgence!
So, indulge! Got it? I thought so. Have a great day!

One good time ends...

I am indulging myself in melancholy here, as I look back over the past ten days. There is a surprising amount to look back on.
The tension, the triumph, the parties, the partings - all the storms and floods, food and friends - no wonder The Bloomingtonauts thought the time went by in a blur.
The flowers that Mimi cut from the farm have faded. Weren't they pretty? Wish I had pictures of the vases of peonies as well as this one with mock orange and iris. The champagne bottles are emptied. Note the amphibian theme here. The crown of laurels, duly won and worn, has been set aside as the Bloomingtonauts depart on yet another adventure.
True to form, the skies opened for a thunderous storm as they drove down the driveway.

The sun shines

The sun is shining, things are drying out. Everywhere people are returning to soggy carpet and dripping furniture. The paper has pictures of the damage revealed as the flood waters go down. A sink-hole opened up on the football field. A bridge is still out at the end of our road.
We are fine. Water is now something for kids to play in at Wonderlab - this fellow is finding out about rocks by washing them during my Wednesday program. Downstream from us, it's a different story.

Call off those water nymphs

It's still raining. In fact, we woke up this morning to thunder shaking the house and the tornado siren going off. Again.

Water is still pouring under the laundry room door. This is now minor compared to what's happening with the rest of our community.

We're now a "disaster area". Officially.

I was down town without my camera when the first flood flashed. Fortunately lots of other people had cameras, check out the gallery at

Recognize Grant Street?

One Post to tell them all

I am not sure what all these symbols mean in my new fortune-telling teacup. However, if I had swirled my tea leaves around this week, their pattern would have indicated lots going on - the very best kind of commotion. So I'm sticking lots in this post just to catch up, even though each event deserves its own thoughtful essay. If anyone wants details just let me know.
There was the big horse move, in which Scotty relocated from his pleasant pasture to the big barn with an indoor arena (see "A Stable in Bloomington") There was the beautiful wedding (and the bridesmaid who spent the night with us)

And, yes, the bride really did sit on the bicycle bar in that fabulous dress and the groom really did pedal off with the Guiness cans clanging behind them...
There was the unexpected out-of-town company, the tornado, the flood, the storms, and the big bash celebrating....

the new Ph. D.!!!

Now you are all caught up, and I have champagne glasses to wash.
